Kai Nessensohn, Head of Sales Automotive Glass at BENTELER Maschinenbau, discusses current product and processing trends as well as the importance of strategic development partnerships.
Mr. Nessensohn, BENTELER has been an established developer and supplier of automotive glass processing equipment for many years. Could you briefly summarize the current trends in this field?
An important general trend that we have been observing for some time and, as a machine manufacturer, have of course been actively following is certainly the ever-increasing automation of manufacturing and machining processes. This development is both a reflection of technical innovation and a necessity due to the growing shortage of skilled workers.
A specific technical trend, for example, is the development of roof glass and its various possibilities: gradual and partial dimming, ambient lighting, starry sky effects, custom patterns, and more. Additionally, an increasing number of vehicle glass surfaces are being coated to prevent heat loss through the glazing. This is particularly important for energy efficiency—it helps to reduce vehicle heating, which in turn lowers the need for air conditioning, leading to less battery strain in electric vehicles and reduced fuel consumption in combustion engines. In this sense, the idea of sustainability is expressed here alongside technical innovation, which I would identify as a further trend.
To what extent is BENTELER involved in these trends?
A great example is our washing machines for automotive glass, such as our coating washing systems. These machines meet the requirements for sustainable production by reducing water and energy consumption. Additionally, they provide an all-in-one solution, handling both pre- and post-wash processing, which minimizes interfaces and simplifies operations for the customer. It is no coincidence that we are the market leader in washing systems for glass coating and curved glass.
Furthermore, we are the world’s most broadly positioned supplier of automotive glass processing equipment, with an extensive sales and service presence across the globe. Our customers certainly appreciate that.
Does this mean that BENTELER is also well-positioned when it comes to automation?
At BENTELER, we are pioneers in automated processing solutions. However, innovation is always a dynamic process—we continuously develop new solutions to meet our customers' needs. Our fully automated systems in the field of automotive glass processing, for example, integrate production steps for windscreens, side windows, rear windows and roof glass in flexible lines. The range covers everything from cutting 2D glass to lamination, inspection, and even packaging of 3D glass.
What role do strategic partnerships play in the field of glass processing machines for automotive applications?
Partnerships are becoming increasingly important for innovative solutions. A few years ago, we might not have given such opportunities so much thought. However, today, speed is just as crucial as innovation. With the right partners, progress happens much faster.
I can confidently say that BENTELER has had very positive experiences with such development partnerships, allowing us to stay ahead in future technologies. With our diverse technical solutions, we have compelling arguments on our side.
